    Short Break

Dreaming of a luxury coastal escape for the weekend? Somewhere you can wake up to the sound of the waves and take an early morning stroll on the sand before tucking into a sumptuous breakfast? Somewhere for an invigorating day in the sea air followed by a decadent dinner? Well you won’t go wrong with a mini break at the stylish Swan in Southwold.

Just a two-hour drive from London (or short train ride to Ipswich, from where you’ll get a luxury transfer), the Swan stands in all its Georgian grandeur at the water’s edge of this pretty seaside town (think independent boutiques and sour-dough bakers). It’s perhaps the only hotel in the world with a brewery and distillery in the backyard, so you’ll be able to enjoy Adnams beers and spirits straight from the source (and you can book a tour, too, if you want to learn more about the brewing or distilling process, and even make your own gin).

When you book with Quintessentially Travel you’ll be greeted with a glass of champagne at check-in and swiftly upgraded to a higher room category (subject to availability). The outstanding rooms are, well, outstanding with lofty ceilings and spacious lounge areas and you’ll be spoilt with a luxury gift (worth £40).

It will be tempting to just revel in the stylish interiors of the hotel; perhaps flopping down on the vibrant green velvet sofa in the drawing room and ordering a multi-tiered afternoon tea. However, there’s exploring to do and the Swan makes it easy for you by offering complimentary use of their touring bicycles. Pick up a route map and head off in the direction of the harbour and then on to neighbouring Walberswick with its wild dunes. If you book the “Escape to the Coast” package, you’ll get £25 of credit per person to stop off and enjoy a tipple in the characterful Harbour Inn in Southwold or the Bell Inn in Walberswick.

For those of you feeling more energetic you could try stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking or canoeing, which can all be arranged by your butler (and are included if you book their “Escape Outdoors” package).

Perhaps that all feels like too much hard work and what you really want to do is lie out on the sand and order a picnic to your blanket. A butler from the Swan will come laden with artisan sandwiches and snacks and a bottle of Adnams seasonal beer and deliver it to your chosen perch. And when you’ve tired of the sand between your toes the butler will be waiting to greet you back with a cold towel and a refreshing drink and you can make your reservations for dinner.

The “Escape to the Coast” package includes £100 of dining credit to fully explore the menu in the Still Room restaurant (and you’ll get £35 of credit on the “Escape Outdoors” break). Perhaps try the scorched mackerel to start followed by the pan-fried sea bass served with charred and pickled purple sprouting broccoli and finished with apple and dill oil.

After a refreshing night’s sleep you’ll be glad of your Quintessentially Travel perk of 1pm check-out so you can linger over the luxurious breakfast and still have time for a final walk on the beach before returning home refreshed and revitalised.
