When it comes to travel clothing, the fabrics you choose can make a huge difference in terms of both your comfort and luggage size. Linen is both a lightweight and breathable fabric that won’t take up a lot of space in your suitcase. One of the best suited fabrics for summer, a sturdy and resilient fabric, that doesn’t cling to the body, linen absorbs perspiration and dries quickly. Strong and supple, linen is the flax plant’s finest product and the quintessential summer cloth that fits better every time you wash it.

We spoke to one of ASCENO’s (the brand helping women look effortlessly cool while travelling the world) founders Lauren Leask on her travel routine and her packing essentials.

What’s your go-to outfit when travelling?

Lauren: It all really depends on where I am travelling to and the how long the flight is. With long-haul flights my ultimate go-to is to be draped in our sandwashed silk pyjamas and of course a matching eye mask to ensure I can get a few hours of sleep in! For short-haul flights around Europe, especially in the summer, I would definitely opt for lightweight, breezy linens. As linen is a loosely woven fabric it allows heat to escape from the body and is also pretty malleable so doesn’t tent to stick to the body making it super comfortable to travel in.

What are your in-flight travel essentials?

Lauren: When I am travelling back home to South Africa, I have a checklist of things that I have to pack in-flight. These include: ASCENO eye mask, ILA rose face oil, Votary Seed Cleanser, water and cashmere socks for optimal comfort!

Describe your desert-island paradise

Lauren: My ideal desert-island paradise would be a peaceful and secluded island where I can totally switch off from everything. Somewhere that is rugged and laid-back with minimal people and lots of hidden coves to go explore. Last but not least, it has to include a fantastic seafood restaurant!

What are your vacation essentials?

Lauren: Endless baskets and straw hats are my absolute essentials! Followed by Sunglasses from Le Specs, comfortable slides, and of course a selection of ASCENO swimwear and linens. I am also obsessed with my new bronze cream by Charlotte Tilbury. I always pack a good book, I’m currently reading The Ordinary People by Diana Evans.

What key pieces would you pack from the collection and how would you style them?

Lauren: The White Linen Oversized Boyfriend Shirt is my staple for days at the beach. I would wear it with the Moroccan Sun One Piece (my favourite swimsuit!) and some denim shorts and slides. I am also living in the Rattan Silk Dress and would be sure to pack this with me. I would keep things super simple and style these with neutral sandals for a look that can transition from day to night.

If you're not familiar with ASCENO, it was founded in 2014 by two friends, Lauren Leask and Poppy Sexton-Wainwright, with the intent to create a collection of wardrobe essentials perfectly curated to take a woman effortlessly through all aspects of her day. As a brand, they strive for women to feel good in their clothes and to wear them like a second skin.

They believe that it is theirs and every brands duty to move as quickly as possible towards sustainability. ASCENO have been working hard to move towards considered materials and environmentally conscious processes throughout their entire supply chain. From the production techniques to the fibres they choose. In particular, they have started to implement organically grown linen that is cultivated in a way that takes into account the welfare of people, animals and the environment. Together with their manufacturers, they grow flax without the use of any artificial fertilisers or pesticides.
