One of the last kingdoms on Earth to remain largely untouched by the modern world, and the only officially Buddhist country on Earth, Bhutan is no ordinary destination. This small landlocked nation is nestled within the peaks of the Himalayas, and centuries of self-isolation have preserved a traditional way of life, making Bhutan a true cultural treasure trove filled with sacred shrines and colourful hilltop fortresses. Amankora was the first luxury resort in Bhutan, made up of five luxury lodges spread across this legendary kingdom, and making the perfect base from which to discover this legendary kingdom in style and comfort, with identical suites throughout to create a sense of feeling at home throughout your journey.

  • Hike to the Taktsang Goemba, or Tigers Nest, a sacred monastery built into the side of a sheer cliff face with spectacular views across the valley
  • Take in the dramatic drive over the impressive Dochu La mountain pass and stop off at one of Bhutan’s first fortress monasteries, the 17th Century Simtokha Dzong
  • Put your archery skills to the test, Bhutans national sport, with the traditional bow and arrows
  • Discuss Buddhist practises with the Mynak Trulku, 12th re-incarnate lama of the powerful Mynak Rinpoche, during an exclusive private meeting
  • Visit Punaka Dzong, also known as the palace of great bliss and the current winter residence for the monastic order
  • Enjoy a cooking class and learn how to make momos, a traditional dumpling, as well as the famous ema datse dish

Amankora Thimphu

Suite | Full Board | 2 Nights

A peaceful retreat set in a pine-filled forest overlooking the capital city of Thimphu, this 16 all-suite lodge is serene yet positioned a stone’s throw from the city. The lodge’s design is inspired by a traditional dzong fortress and this is the grandest of the Amankora properties, which is very fitting as the King is a close neighbour. The suites emanate contemporary clean lines and muted tones with the combination of stone, wood and glass blurring the lines between inside and the surrounding forest.

Amankora Punakha

Suite | Full Board | 2 Nights

A cosy and intimate lodge with just 8 suites set within a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse and overlooking orange orchards, rice paddies and the Mo Chhu river just 10 minutes’ drive from the 17th-century Punakha Dzong. The suites are housed within three packed earth villas, giving them a authentic rural feel and offering stunning views up the Punakha Valley, or you can also enjoy the view from the hotel’s stunning infinity pool.

Amankora Paro

Suite | Full Board | 3 Nights

Discreetly tucked within a pine forest just above Paro, and overlooking Mount Jumolhari, this is an ideal base for those interested in immersing in local village life, and hiking the famous Tiger’s Nest. The 24 open-plan suites are scattered through the forest between several blocks, clad in timber and stone, each wonderfully minimalist but with a nod to traditional Bhutanese style. However, it is the spa which sets this hotel apart, with an outdoor hot-stone bath and glass-walled sauna overlooking the forest beyond.
