Set on a secluded peninsula on the island of Miyakojima in Okinawa Prefecture, Rosewood Miyakojima is a serene island retreat where Ryukyuan heritage, modern Japanese design, and immersive wellness come together in Rosewood’s first property in Japan.

The Hotel

Opened in 2025, Rosewood Miyakojima introduces the brand’s signature philosophy of A Sense of Place to one of Japan’s most pristine island destinations. Located on the remote Ryukyu archipelago in southern Okinawa, the resort is surrounded by the crystal-clear waters for which Miyakojima is renowned, offering a quieter alternative to Japan’s better-known beach destinations while celebrating the island’s rich cultural traditions and natural beauty.

Designed by Studio Piet Boon, the resort comprises just 55 oceanfront villas and houses, each carefully positioned to maximise privacy and uninterrupted sea views. The architecture embraces Japanese minimalism through clean lines, locally sourced Ryukyu limestone, warm timber, and tactile natural materials that echo the colours of the island’s coral beaches and subtropical landscape. Every accommodation features its own private pool and generous outdoor living space, while the larger signature houses offer multiple bedrooms, private barbecue areas, and expansive entertaining terraces for families and groups.

Rather than competing with its surroundings, Rosewood Miyakojima has been conceived to sit quietly within the landscape, creating an atmosphere where nature, craftsmanship, and understated luxury exist in perfect balance.

Amenities

The resort’s experiences are deeply rooted in the traditions of the Ryukyu Islands, inviting guests to engage with the destination beyond its spectacular coastline. At Asaya Spa, ancient Okinawan healing rituals are reinterpreted through personalised wellness journeys, combining holistic treatments, movement practices, thermal experiences, and nature-inspired therapies designed to restore both body and mind. Daily beach yoga, meditation, and wellbeing programmes further reinforce the resort’s restorative approach.

Dining reflects Miyakojima’s unique culinary identity through a collection of thoughtfully curated venues. Choma, the resort’s Japanese signature restaurant, presents four distinct expressions of Japanese cuisine inspired by the surrounding sea and local produce, while Nagi celebrates the connection between Italy and Japan through refined Italian cooking centred on longevity and seasonal ingredients. Choma Bar offers craft cocktails inspired by the stories and traditions of Okinawa’s eight inhabited islands, while Maas provides an informal beachfront setting showcasing the day’s freshest seafood.

Beyond the resort, guests can discover the soul of Miyakojima through curated cultural experiences including traditional Adan weaving, Japanese culinary masterclasses, encounters with the endangered Miyako horse, and guided marine adventures. Snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming alongside sea turtles reveal the extraordinary clarity of the island’s celebrated “Miyako Blue” waters, while nearby coral reefs and quiet beaches offer some of Japan’s most unspoilt coastal scenery.

Rosewood Miyakojima offers a distinctly different vision of luxury in Japan – one that looks beyond the country’s cities and ski resorts to embrace the slower rhythms, rich traditions, and remarkable natural beauty of the Ryukyu Islands.
