Exploring Vienna

From the magnificent Baroque buildings to “golden” Art Nouveau, to the latest architecture Vienna offers an abundance of sights, plus over 100 museums beckon. Take a walk on The Ringstrasse; some say the most beautiful boulevard in the world. This is home not only to many of Vienna's best-known sights, such as the Imperial Palace, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Natural History Museum, the Vienna State Opera and Parliament. Magnificent palaces, extensive parks and important monuments also line the "display window" of the former Danube monarchy. There are also a plethora of ways to enjoy the city such as by using one of Vienna’s certified city guides, sightseeing by bus, tram, boat, bicycle of even Segway. We think a guided tour of the Vienna state Opera is an absolute must plus amusement park Prater is fun for all ages; this is a place of nostalgic dreams for some, oasis of greenery for almost everyone – and the location of the Giant Ferris Wheel, one of Vienna’s most famous symbols. The Vienna Prater is in season from March to October. But the world-famous Giant Ferris Wheel and a few other attractions are open all year round.

Dining and Shopping

Enjoy Vienna to the fullest during a casual shopping trip or indulge in the sweet life at coffee shops and wine taverns, or while exploring the Viennese cuisine and markets. A true bon vivant will know that Viennese Cuisine is the only cuisine in the world to be named after a city. Viennese cuisine is unsurpassed in its variety and influenced by the former countries of the Habsburg monarchy with traditional dishes ranging from Wiener schnitzel to goulash. Vienna is rightly known around the world for its traditional inns and cosy coffee houses, but Vienna is also home to world-class gourmet restaurants. The top chefs have the courage to innovate and radicalise the traditions of Viennese cuisine with restaurants such as Aend, Restaurant Amador, Restaurant Edvard and Kim being wonderful examples of this. Some 133 Viennese restaurants currently hold the coveted toques of Gault & Millau, while a total of nineteen Michelin stars are shared between thirteen restaurants in Vienna. The wine cellar of Palais Coburg is one of the best in the world and offers true wine rarities for aficionados and connoisseurs.

For shopping we love the Christmas markets. From mid-November until Christmas, Vienna's most beautiful squares are once again transformed into magical Christmas markets. The aroma of Christmas baking, hot punch and toasted almonds wafts through the air. The Old City and shopping streets are decorated with festive lights that spread the Christmas cheer in Vienna. Outside of the markets go on a shopping spree in Vienna - and you'll find yourself surrounded by the residences and palaces of emperors and princes. The Goldenes Quartier in the Old City is one of the most exclusive shopping districts in Vienna. The flagship stores of Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Valentino, Saint Laurent, Prada, Miu Miu, Brioni, Alexander McQueen and others can be found here. The former imperial and royal court purveyors once supplied the imperial household and still stand for the finest quality handcraft today. The traditional Viennese company Scheer has produced elegant made to measure shoes by hand for generations. Other royal and imperial court purveyors such as the glass and lighting manufacturer J. & L. Lobmeyr, the Augarten porcelain manufactory or the jeweler A.E. Köchert guarantee unique products to this day and also offer a glimpse behind the scenes.

Viennese tailoring

Tradition and elegance that outlive mere fashion trends – Viennese tailors take the measure of bespoke clothing and footwear.

Scheer is steeped in tradition. In 1816 Johann Scheer opened a shoemakers in Vienna. His grandson Rudolf's customer list included such prominent names as Emperor Franz Joseph. In 1878 he became official Court Shoemaker, a title that elevated him to the rank of imperial court purveyor. Today the family business has entered its seventh generation and is still making quality tailored ladies' and gentlemen’s footwear.

Viennese Handicrafts

Vienna's imperial and royal court purveyors supplied the imperial house in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. A few traditional companies still bear this title today and offer the finest handcrafted quality in a pleasant ambience. Imperial and royal court purveyors can be found in all industries - after all, the Viennese court needed goods and services of every kind, such as those of the two most famous confectioners. Now as then, Sacher and the court confectioner Demel supply the city and its visitors with delicacies such as Sachertorte and candied violets. Empress Sisi was particularly fond of the (violet) sweets from Demel. The trademark of the coffee house remains the exclusively female staff in black uniforms.

Wine

Wine has had a long tradition in Vienna. This is reflected not only by the numerous heurige but also several beautiful, old wine cellars. These are drawing in visitors with special offers and guided tours.

The 500 year-old Villon Wine Cellar is one of the oldest wine cellars in Vienna. A four-storey descent leads 16 meters below the streets in the heart of Vienna. The cellar tour is followed by a tasting of excellent wines, accompanied by stories from the cellar's history, as well as about Viennese wine and Viennese spring water.

Imperial gourmet trips

An imperial nostalgia train from the imperial age offers luxurious excursions. Guests are pampered on board with a stylish dinner. Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph I. once travelled their realm in their own imperial and royal court saloon train built in 1891 - from Bad Ischl to the seaside resort of Abbazia (present-day Opatija) on the Adriatic coast. The Majestic Imperator Train de Luxe now once again invites guests on special trips.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art History Museum) was built in 1891 near the Imperial Palace to house the extensive collections of the imperial family. The Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art History Museum) was built in 1891 near the Imperial Palace to house the extensive collections of the imperial family.With its vast array of eminent works and the largest Bruegel collection in the world, it is considered one of the most eminent museums in the world. Then you have the Albertina which not only has the largest and most valuable graphical collections in the world, with works such as Dürer’s “Hare” and Klimt's studies of women. Its latest exhibition collection presents masterpieces of the Modern, spanning Monet to Picasso and Baselitz. As the largest Habsburg residential palace, the Albertina dominates the southern tip of the Imperial Palace on one of the last remaining fortress walls in Vienna.


Vienna is the world’s capital of music — The Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Boys’ Choir set the international tone, while the State Opera House and the Golden Hall at the Musikverein are among the world’s leading venues. Traditional strengths endure to this day — the Vienna sound pioneered by local DJs enjoys worldwide popularity. For opera, the Vienna State Opera is prized for its exceptional acoustics. There are performances almost 300 nights a year and a different billing virtually every day. The Theater an der Wien has established a name for itself as „the other“ venue for opera. New premieres each month — from baroque to contemporary — are a hit among opera-goers. Meanwhile at the Vienna Chamber Opera, the focus is on rarities. The Volksoper presents classic operas in German, musicals and lively operettas.

We also need to mention the Spanish Riding School and its world-famous Lipizzaners which offer the highest standard of horse-riding art in the Baroque ambience of the Imperial Palace. This is the only institution in the world where the classic equestrian skills (haute école) has been preserved and is still practiced in its original form. Many years of training fuse horse and rider into an inseparable unit. The audience is treated to an unforgettable experience by the precision of movement of the Lipizzan horses in perfect harmony with the music.




Health & Wellness


Residents of Vienna don't have to leave the city to go on a trip to the countryside and enjoy nature. Almost every corner has a garden, a park or even a forest and offers the possibility to breathe deep and relax. Why not explore the Vienna Woods; Vienna is situated on the western edge of the Vienna Basin, on the gentle slopes of the Vienna Woods, a branch of the foothills of the Alps. This “Green Lung” is part of the (legally protected) green belt. In 2005, the Vienna Woods were also designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO – a designation for areas with a special cultural and natural landscape. A world city partially situated in a Biosphere Reserve is not only something special, but also unique anywhere in the world!

Numerous parks, greens spaces and sports facilities, extensive recreational areas, clean rivers and lakes, and many sporting events make Vienna a wonderful location for outdoor sports.
