VIENNA FOR THE SENSES

The beautiful capital of Austria – Vienna; is perfect for a multi sensory journey

If we start with the food - many would say that good taste has been at home in Viennese cuisine for centuries. But those who think only of Wiener schnitzel underestimate the variety that gourmets can expect to find in Vienna. Tafelspitz (traditional fillet of boiled beef), Blunzen (blood sausage) and sausage in general are some of the hearty classics of Viennese cuisine. These Viennese classics are hearty, spicy and piquant, and sometimes also sour. The Viennese Beisl (bistro) is a mainstay of Viennese dining and can be identified by the typical mouth-watering aroma upon entering.

Viennese pastries are also inseparable from the Viennese coffee house culture. Why not visit the Café Sacher Vienna in the famed Hotel Sacher whilst in Vienna? You can experience the famous Viennese coffee house culture the Sacher way. This offers the perfect setting to enjoy the typical and unique Viennese coffee house atmosphere - of course with a piece of the original Sacher cake.

Have you heard?

Music is symbolic for Vienna: spellbinding musicality abounds. Enjoy the simple pleasures of hearing the noise of horse-drawn carriages and cars on the cobbles, the ringing of the Pummerin in St. Stephen’s Cathedral or the sound of the Anker Clock at the top of the hour from Hoher Markt. A visit to the Vienna State Opera is surely a must as it offers a diverse program of both opera and ballet with some of the best known names in opera creating magical moments. A chance to hear the Vienna boys choir is extremely special too, you can regularly hear them as part of the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle at the Holy Mass in the Hofburg Chapel on Sundays (September to June). The ensemble is absolutely top-class: The Vienna Boys Choir and members of the Male Choir of the Vienna State Opera as well as of the Vienna Philharmonic make music in the top gallery of the Hofburgkapelle.

Ultimate relaxation

A visit to the Therme Wien is surely a must if you want to balance the sightseeing with some pure wellness. Europe’s biggest and most modern city spa makes wellness dreams come true! Therme Wien, Vienna's thermal baths, can be reached directly and quickly from the city centre with subway line U1.

The sulphur healing springs in Vienna were popular even amongst the Romans. To enable them to be used, Therme Oberlaa was opened in 1974 in the south of Vienna. In 2010, this was converted to become Therme Wien: 26 pools, 25 sauna and steam rooms, 2,500 loungers and a 6,000 m2 health and fitness area make it the largest thermal baths in Austria.

A feast for the eyes

Vienna is a veritable powerhouse of art – the cultural offering is incredibly diverse. More than 100 museums are waiting to be discovered. Vienna offers collections of world standing as well as real secret tips. Geniuses of the century like Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele meet the stars of contemporary Vienna. September, October and November are wonderful months to visit Vienna for this reason; every year between September and November, Vienna serves up a packed program of art events. The autumn of art takes visitors to exciting places and the most exciting (inter-)national artworks, buildings, and designs.

If we had to pick just one to start with? Why not try out the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien (Art History Museum). Built in 1891 near the Imperial Palace to house the extensive collections of the imperial family it hosts a vast array of eminent works and the largest Bruegel collection in the world and is considered one of the most eminent museums in the world. Numerous major art works of European art history, among them Raphael’s "Madonna in the Meadow," Vermeer’s "The Allegory of Painting," the Infanta paintings by Velazquez, masterworks by Rubens, Rembrandt, Dürer, Titian and Tintoretto are housed in the paintings gallery. The Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection contains fascinating treasures from mysterious cultures long past.

Fragrant evocations

Some would say Vienna isn’t just to be seen and heard but that you need to smell it too.. It doesn't just smell of schnitzel and coffee! We love the aroma of chocolate wafers from Viennese brand Manner’s factory in the 16th district. Also, take a walk in the stunning Rose garden within The Volksgarten Park which is a beautiful landscaped park located to one side of the Hofburg palace complex. Close your eyes and take in the delicious aromas
